Depression and Anxiety Are Common Among Patients with Lung Disease
Interstitial lung diseases are a highly disabling group of conditions characterized by breathing difficulties, progressive deterioration in the ability to exercise, and reduced life expectancy.
A new Respirology study reveals that anxiety and depression are common in patients with interstitial lung diseases, with a 31% prevalence of anxiety and a 23% prevalence of depression. Depression and anxiety were more common in people who suffered from greater shortness of breath, and in those who had multiple health problems in addition to their lung disease.
“This study suggests that any treatments that can reduce breathlessness and improve co-existing medical conditions may be important for good mental health in people with interstitial lung disease,” said lead author Dr. Anne Holland.
