Institutions in Germany gain access to the Cochrane Library for 10 years

The Cochrane Library is now available to more than 650,000 students and faculty at 47 universities in Germany. This important new deal was agreed on March 9th 2010 between Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg in Frankfurt, Germany, and Wiley-Blackwell.

This German National Academic Opt-In Consortium is open to all academic institutions and university clinics in Germany and allows access to The Cochrane Library for the period from 2010 to 2019.  So far 47 institutions have agreed to the deal and more may follow in the future.  The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Central Medical Library (ZB MED) are providing a substantial part of the funding to enable academic institutions to get access at a moderate cost.

The internationally renowned Cochrane Library is a collection of regularly updated Evidence-based healthcare databases, including the gold-standard Cochrane Systematic Reviews. The Cochrane Library helps healthcare professionals to make informed decisions about treatments.

“Widespread dissemination of Cochrane Reviews is important for all of us at The Cochrane Collaboration,” said David Tovey, Editor in Chief of The Cochrane Library. “Many of our contributors spend years researching, evaluating and appraising information so that medical learning and practice are of the highest quality. We are always encouraged when countries recognise the value of our work. Helping shape medical education makes it worthwhile”

"The Cochrane Library is the most comprehensive global source of evidence and indispensable for the quality assessment of healthcare interventions. This contract is a major step towards systematic use of evidence and hopefully a preliminary step for a general national provision," said Gerd Antes, Director of the German Cochrane Centre (DCZ).

The Cochrane Library is available to the universities in Germany via www.thecochranelibrary.com

1.    About The Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library contains high quality health care information, including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, from the Cochrane Collaboration. Cochrane Systematic Reviews bring together research on the effects of health care and are considered the gold standard for determining the relative effectiveness of different interventions. The Cochrane Collaboration (http://www.cochrane.org) is a UK registered international charity and the world's leading producer of systematic Reviews. It has been demonstrated that Cochrane Systematic Reviews are of comparable or better quality and are updated more often than the reviews published in print journals (Wen J et al; The reporting quality of meta-analyses improves: a random sampling study. Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 2008; 61: 770-775).

2.   From 2010 The Cochrane Library has moved from quarterly to monthly publication.

The Cochrane Library is published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the Cochrane Collaboration.

The Cochrane Library Podcasts: a collection of podcasts on a selection of Cochrane Reviews by authors of reviews in this issue will be available from http://www.cochrane.org/podcasts.
