Performance Improvement Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal with a mission to stimulate professional discussion in the field and to advance the interdisciplinary field of Human Performance Technology (HPT) through the publication of scholarly works including literature reviews, experimental studies, survey research, and case studies.

The HPT field seeks to integrate and expand the methods, processes, and findings of other disciplines as they relate to solving problems and realizing opportunities in human performance (the valued results produced by people working within a system). HPT work focuses on valued, measured results; considers the larger system context of peoplebs performance; and provides valid and reliable measures of effectiveness. HPT is applied to the performance of individuals, groups, and organizations.

Performance Improvement Quarterly emphasizes original work from the following communities of research and practice:
